FAQ

You’ve got questions? We’ve got answers.

What age do kids get braces?
The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that children first visit an orthodontist around the age of 7. Starting early, as the face and jaws are developing, allow our doctors to advise and monitor a treatment plan custom made for the child. Not every child this age will begin treatment, but early visits allow our doctors to monitor dental and facial growth and development.
Can adults get braces?
Absolutely! Orthodontic treatment is not only for children and teenagers, about one in four patients are over the age of 21. If you want to improve the look and feel of your smile, you can get traditional braces or Invisalign at any age!
What is Invisalign?
Unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign requires no brackets, wires or metal bands. Invisalign uses a series of clear, custom made aligners that are virtually invisible to straighten teeth. As you change each set of aligners, your teeth gradually move into position, following a custom treatment plan mapped out by our doctors. The aligners are removable and should be taken out to eat and brush/floss your teeth.
Why do I need to see an orthodontist?
Moving teeth is a prescribed medical procedure and needs personal, direct supervision by an orthodontist. Unsupervised moving of teeth could ultimately result in permanent loss of teeth, gum loss, changed bites and other issues that can be expensive and lifelong dental problems. We provide in-person, doctor-driven care to ensure your new, beautiful smile will last a lifetime.
How do I maintain healthy teeth and gums while in braces?
It is very important to brush at least twice a day and floss daily while in treatment. If you are in traditional metal braces, you want to avoid sticky and chewy foods, hard food or food that can get stuck in your braces. Examples include caramel, chewing gum, hard candy, corn on the cob and taffy. We also strongly encourage regular visits to the family dentist.
How long do you wear braces?
Every smile is different so treatment in traditional braces or Invisalign will vary depending on the individual patient. Average treatment lasts around 22 months with the shortest treatment plans being around 6 months and longest around 30 months.
Will braces hurt?
Although braces will not cause a lot of pain, there will be discomfort after adjustments are made at the orthodontist.
